Pagan Dances - Thierry Zaboitzeff

A suivre...

TRANSLATION

With this recurring pandemic of uncertain events, it is difficult to follow many of the artists we love. Thierry Zaboitzeff, for example, had to put the magnificent Aria Primitiva, of which we had said all the good things we thought, on hold and returned to a solo formula, which he has practised for many years.

Professional Stranger first appeared in digital form before being released in physical form last spring in a context that was not necessarily favourable. 9 quite different tracks follow each other in a form of travels with sounds that are quite surprising for those who frequent the composer's byways. One could even think that T.Z. wanted to propose here a form of introduction to his universe, with rather strong "pop" winks. This is not a problem in itself, the musician has been a master in the art of sound arrangement for a long time, but to my great regret, the record doesn't manage to maintain the listener's interest. Problem in the order of the titles? Perhaps... There are some beautiful things here but the overall scenography totally escapes me making me cling to the more characteristic ambiences of the musician. I miss a link or simply this record doesn't appeal to me, despite its obvious qualities.

With Pagan Dances we find ourselves in more familiar territory. The European influences are asserted here and the music becomes more violent with this art of the counterpoint which is a bit the trademark of the composer. The (electronic) percussion is at the heart of some of the more energetic sequences, and it's a pity that Daniel Denis isn't part of it. I must admit that I find myself much more in tune with this darker, sometimes tormented universe with its unexpected mazes. Thierry Moreau's visuals perfectly illustrate the general climate. These pagan dances have many surprises in store for the listener with a second, more "atmospheric" track with its imaginary language and undeniable mystery. Pagan Dances is only available digitally on the artist's website.

As 2022 marks his 50th birthday (of music), Thierry retraces his career on his website, from the beginnings of Art Zoyd to... It's fascinating, lively and a reflection of a hell of a time! There are whispers, in well-informed circles, that a retrospective box set is on the agenda... To be continued...

Pagan Dances - Thierry Zaboitzeff

This EP, only available (for the moment) in digital version, offers two tracks that appear as the soundtrack of a haunted universe, in which man slips into a dark, mysterious, anguishing nature in search of an alternative truth, in the face of the questions of the present time. A universe into which Thierry Zaboitzeff, operating here on the bass, his electric cello, digital synthesis and various virtual sounds, had already led us more than 30 years ago with Art Zoyd in his creation for Benjamin Christensen's film, Häxan (1921).
The piano notes, shrouded in a mysterious halo, flow into each other and create a hallucinating rhythm, onto which can be grafted the effects of a guitar with a delicate Frippian tension.
the effects of a guitar with a delicate Frippian tension, the effects of hallucinated voices, some more liberated phrasing by the cello...
This first piece is followed by a short second piece, "La Légende NaYmA", which appears as a culmination in a more relaxed, almost appeased space, presented by a voice with prophetic accents.

Pagan Dances - Thierry Zaboitzeff

TRANSLATION
In just twenty minutes, Thierry Zaboitzeff sets the scene once again with Pagan Dances for his nocturnal worlds, whose uneasy contours he has been drawing for more than forty-five years now. Let's remember the first recordings of the group Art Zoyd and his Symphony for the day when the cities burn. In other words, the chronicle of a foretold collapse that we will bring closer to Génération sans futur or Espaces inquiets some time later. One shudders just reading them, one is overcome by fever when listening to them. In any case, the vibration is strong, almost telluric.

The multi-instrumentalist (but first a bassist and cellist) seems to be particularly active for some time. The proof is Aria Primitiva in 2019 or Professional Stranger just a year ago, two albums I had the opportunity to report on at the time of their release. Essential evocations insofar as this musician seems to me to be one of those who have succeeded in inventing their own universe. It is safe to assume that there is indeed a "Planet Zaboitzeff" somewhere, very close to us.

Twenty minutes, yes, that is to say a fraction of a second on the scale of a lifetime, to express the essence of a musician inhabited as in the early days, through an idiom adorned with the colours of a music whose torments would be those of a journey in the direction of the great mystery, an initiatory journey punctuated by encounters which you don't know if they should force you to move away under the influence of a sudden fear or arouse your curiosity. Because this music is human, be sure, it is the ripe fruit of the heart and soul. It is certainly cerebral, but also carnal, not to say sensual. These "pagan dances" are not joyful, it is true. They question our world, which we know is too often cold and implacable. However, they do in fact take the form of dances, intoxicating and irresistible, in a haunted choreography whose movements are carried by a piano with Bartokian accents and a guitar that does not deny its Frippian aestheticism. The title composition - about which I allow myself to think that certain passages recall the work of Art Zoyd's sister group, Univers Zéro - stretches for a quarter of an hour, multiplying the ambushes, the changes of trajectory and altitude, combining the sonorities. One could speak of contemporary electro-acoustic chamber music or technoid rock where samples and synthetic strings flourish. This is only the outline of a wording of what is received, in the first place. It is above all a journey about which our friend Thierry Moreau (who once again signs the album's visuals, bravo to him) says with great acuity that he hears: "music from an imaginary film, a post-dystopian Polovtsian Dance ballet".

The conclusion of this bewitching (and inevitably too short) disc takes the form of an enigmatic ballad just as nocturnal as 'Pagan Dances', 'The Legend of NaYmA'. A piano and a cello can be heard over which a voice declaims words whose meaning escapes us, but which we only need to feel to understand them. Behind this apparent mystery is undoubtedly the definition of an organic language, as Thierry Zaboitzeff himself explained to me in a recent exchange: "I built up this whole dark atmosphere between percussion, cello and piano and then improvised with my voice, letting myself be guided by my orchestra, if I may say so, and finding different articulations, different sounds, different emotions, onomatopoeia... Recording after recording, I collect the sounds that touch me the most and I end up taking a piece of this or that track and I rewrite a text that suits me emotionally in the situation... And I fix the whole thing, then I rewrite it properly, it's not a language, but I like to think that it may be a forgotten language very intimately linked to the sounds produced in my composition.

Everything is said, life is here.

Pagan Dances - Thierry Zaboitzeff

In the year or so since Professional Stranger, Dr. Zab has been very busy with this, his latest and certainly appropriately titled blast of angular and emotional contemporary music, sometimes electro-acoustic, sometimes modern classical, and sometimes ambient, all converging in one dark form or another. Usually with Zaboitzeff’s releases we get a little more information regarding what it was created for — usually a modern dance project or somesuch — but here little information is given, the music simply speaks for itself as it goes forward, though it does shift around with regularity, bits and pieces all fused together in an interesting and irregular start-stop sequences. There are two parts — the first (and main) part is the fifteen-minute instrumental piece “Pagan Dances” (okay, there are some mysterious voice samples in there), and then a shorter five-minute piece titled “La Legende de NaYma” that is more uniformly dark and creepy, where spoken word parts abound, a bit more subtle and subdued than the first piece. There you have it, ostensibly a single, fifteen minutes with a fiveminute B-side. Zaboitzeff plays all of the instrumentation here, which includes bass guitar, electric cello, guitar, keyboards, sampler, electronic percussion, as well as virtual acoustic instruments (which seem to include strings, horns, and more), and is also responsible for the composition, recording, and mixing. The longer piece does sound like it could have been written for some choreographed project, although that is merely speculation on my part; while the piece is occasionally very reminiscent of Zab’s work with Art Zoyd circa Berlin, discerning listeners will definitely hear a bit more avantgarde electronica in the soundworld of Pagan Dances.

Pagan Dances - Thierry Zaboitzeff

TRANSLATION
This is what music lovers need in these dark times: eclectic music that seems to depict rugged rocky or coastal landscapes rather than pretending to be magical fairytale worlds.

For his digital EP "Pagan Dances", Thierry Zaboitzeff played all the acoustic and electronic instruments himself, programmed all the virtual instruments himself, sang and shouted himself (as he says himself) and did all the sound work himself.

Electric cello, bass, guitar, keyboards and programmed rhythms let me hear them in this music, which conveys a healthy restlessness and subliminal threat between chamber music, modern classical music, ambient, a pinch of electronics and avant-prog. Bumpy and simple electronic rhythms were used for this. In more dramatic moments, virtual wind instruments can be heard. To name only the most important components. The entertaining fifteen minutes of the title track are quickly over.

Five more minutes of the legend of NayMa follow, presenting the slightly eerie recitations and chants in a language unknown to me. These are accompanied by sustained chamber music consisting of piano and cello themes and programmed percussion.

Thierry Zaboitzeff - Pagan Dances

#rockinopposition – 19:36 – France ‘21

He has a sound all his own (and the electric cello is not the only guarantor) - the grail of any group, all the more difficult to reach for a solo artist (apart from the so personal contours of the voice) -, Thierry Zaboitzeff (Aria Primitiva, ex-Art Zoyd, theatre and film music... ), capable of cavernous and aerial exploration at the same time (the song/piano pairing of "suspended in the cave", "La Légende de NaYmA"), as well as of a more obscure (hazardous? ) in the universe of these "pagan dances", nervous, disturbing, on the edge of what we want to see - or hear.

Thierry Zaboitzeff - Pagan Dances (imd zabmusic)

TRANLATION
Mastermind of the French rock avant-garde Thierry Zaboytsev doesn't take a nap: In September this year he released a new digital single. It contains two tracks - "Pagan Dances", which gave its name to the whole EP, and "La Légende de NaYmA". Almost 15 minutes long "Pagan Dances" certainly refers us to Stravinsky: his "Sacred Spring", "The Firebird" with its "Koshchei Kingdom's Pagan Dance". But with Zaboitsev this is, if I may say so, the paganism of the post-industrial era. And that is why everything sounds modern, in the spirit of the time: with abundant electronics, machine rhythms, sonorous textures and samples integrated into the sound fabric. At the same time there is a lot of live, humanity in the music - acoustic cello, piano and even electric guitar singing expressively in Thierry's hands. Needless to say, all the instruments were played, programmed and put together by Thierry Zaboytsev himself.
Composition "Pagan Dances" has rondo-like structure and is built on alternation and renewal of several elements-leitmotifs. They are distant dissonant synth "calls" that sound mysterious and frightening (it's the beginning of the piece); melancholic and sad phrases of cello; jumping sinuous motives and gamma-like passages of piano, overlaid with lingering howls of electric guitar (they remind the manner of Robert Fripp); The pounding chords of the whole band; the fragments with clear, almost dancing rhythms and sampled inserts - they sound driving and, at the same time, ominous. All this layered, "rolled up" on one another, and "Pagan Dances" finishes with a veritable "apocalyptic" coda with low brass trumpet calls and looped string chorale - it reminds one of those dark, old passacaglias, and of course, the visionary Art Zoyd albums like "Symphonie pour le jour où brûleront les cités".
After that, the rather short (about 5 minutes) "La Légende de NaYmA" sounds like a lullaby tale. But the tale is quite scary. In it, Thierry Zaboytsev, against a backdrop of flickering piano motifs, creaky cello counterpoints and distant tinkles of electronics, conducts a story in an incomprehensible language. (Sometimes Russian words like "horror" are heard there). As if he does not scare anyone, on the contrary, he calms him down. And yet... What is the story about? About bloody battles, sufferings, lost riches, a beautiful princess imprisoned in a tower? We don't know how it ended, let's hope it's good... We only have to listen to Thierry Zaboitsev's deep voice and lonely cello singing at the very end of this legendary song.
All in all, the single is a gift for progressive and avant-garde lovers, and is recommended as a must-listen.
PS It's also worth mentioning the interesting monochrome cover by Thierry Moreau: "dancing stump" as if personifies the revived forces of nature.
You can listen the single on all digital platforms, for example on bandcamp: https://thierryzaboitzeff.bandcamp.com/album/pagan-dances-ep.

Thierry Zaboitzeff - Pagan Dances (imd zabmusic)

TRANSLATION
The intro immediately makes me think of a related immersion between Jon HASSELL and film music inspired by contemporary 20th century classics.
The balance between textures, percussions, samples and strings is always with Thierry ZABOITZEFF of a great rigour of writing. It is of the order of the rhythmic science and post-stravinskian sensuality of The Rite of Spring.
The music is structured but free, open and generous. The piano, hammered into a 'Bartokian' frenzy, is on the alert, and the 'Frippian' guitar and haunting rhythm underline the dark and disquieting, vibrant and lively climates. I feel like I'm listening to music from a fantasy film, a post-dystopian Polovtsian dance ballet.
Pagan Dances is a last gasp of humanity, an ultimate dance from the imaginary bowels of our collective unconscious. This work is a pure delight, a praise of the shadow.
